First Presbyterian Church History

Due to the deep and abiding faith of two women, Isabelle and Christine Duncan, members of the First Baptist Church in Paterson, Sunday school classes began in the late 1800s.  Classes began in an old schoolhouse directly across from our present church.  They also conducted prayer meetings in homes.  Their work and that of others led to the establishment of our church through the petition of 85 members asking the Second Presbyterian Church of Paterson to receive us a s Branch Mission in October 1911.  Later that year the North Haledon Presbyterian Church was organized and early in 1912 a building fund was initiated.  Land was purchased, plans drawn up and in 1915 our church was dedicated.  Church schoolrooms were added as income allowed.  Church pews, a baptismal font, and a steeple were obtained from another church nearby.  The baptismal font is still in use in the sanctuary of our present church.  The North Haledon Presbyterian Church became the First Presbyterian Church of North Haledon in 1930 with 114 charter members.  At the present time there is only one living charter member, Anna Elkland, and she is 100 years old.  For many years she was involved in our Sunday school.

Reverend T. Leyton Frazer was installed as the first Minister in 1930.  In 1935 we were fortunate enough to obtain a pipe organ from the estate of the former Vice President Garret Hobart, Jr., providing we dismantled and moved it.  It is one of the most outstanding pipe organs in our area and was renovated about eight years ago at the cost of $70,000.  Many fundraisers went into reaching the final amount of money that was needed.

In 1954, it was realized that a Manse was needed.  We built it after many fundraisers.  Members of the congregation offered their services to keep the costs down.  One cannot see our church without almost smelling the chowder that was made every Election Day.  We began making and serving chowder in 1956 and have continued the tradition until just two years ago.  A lot of hard work over a period of four days went into each Chowder Sale.  The profits from this venture have benefited our church in many ways.

In 1959, architectural plans were drawn up for a new church building costing about $130,000.  It was completed in 1961.  In 1985, air conditioning was installed in our Sanctuary.  It 1972, we acquired a local Grange building only two doors away, which completed our complex of buildings.  It houses "Little Steps Nursery School."  When we built the new church, the old church became our Christian Education building.  It houses "The North Haledon Cooperative Nursery School."  Both nursery schools have made generous donations to the church through the years.  The Christian Education building also includes space for Church School classes, Scouts, our youth group, and an archery program.

The church grew greatly to a peak membership of 471 in 1971.  The Sunday School enrollment grew to 332 in 1950 with an average attendance of 199.  In 1961 it grew to an enrollment of 416.  With the establishment of other churches in our town starting in the late 1960's, membership in the church and Sunday School were adversely affected.  Currently, church membership has declined to 167 and a Sunday School enrollment of 6.
